What is gamification?

Gamification is not well understood.

Gamification isn't the act of turning something into a game. It’s much more.

Gamification is the addition of game mechanics into non-game environments, like a website, online community, learning management system or business’ intranets to increase participation.

The goal of gamification is to engage with users and inspire them to collaborate, share or interact.

How does gamification work?

Gamification works by providing users with proactive directives and feedback through game mechanics and game dynamics within the online platform, that lead to the accomplishments of the goals and objectives we we set for users.

A compelling gamification experience taps into a participant’s emotions and helps them easily see the best activities they can complete that make an impact on mutually shared goals. Users receive immediate feedback on performance and guided next steps towards new achievements.

So, for us here at CybSafe, gamification is all part of the science of motivation.

True gamification is data-driven. It’s not just about turning everything into a game-experience

How does gamification manifest itself in the CybSafe platform?

The CybSafe platform makes the most of the motivational power of gamification to influence cybersecurity behaviour, drive platform engagement, and motivate users to take a great interest in cybersecurity.

Our platform is continually developed and constantly evolves and matures to do this better.

The ‘gamified’ content takes a number of forms including:

  • Points & leaderboards - Our Security Hero leaderboard shows your people their Hero score and how they are doing compared to their colleagues

  • Progress indicators - Our reporting pages, Goals feature, and "To-Do List" show users clearly how much they have left to do and what they have already completed

  • Multiple choice questions - Our end of module quizzes and refresher tests give users multiple options to choose from

  • Sharing and social commentary - CybSafe allows people to share content with their friends and family, which also counts towards their score on the Security Hero leaderboard

  • Dashboards, metrics & scores - Our reporting pages show people comparatively for a multitude of features, including phishing data, module completion, and goal completion

  • Goal setting & challenges - Goals are interactive checklists of security behaviours that people can complete and see their progress over time with

  • Certificates & rewards - Our certificate on completion of CybSafe modules gives people a tangible reward for engaging with the platform which can be put on their Linkedin page.

  • Interactive feedback - Administrators can set up automations that send a positive nudge to anyone who reports a CybSafe phishing email. Goals will also update depending on next steps completed.
